An Apple a Day

How many apple’s can my family use in a week?  In the past 3 days we have gone through 12 kilograms (26.5 pounds).  Yes, you read that right!  We are in apple heaven here in our house.

Does these not look delicious?

Why so many apples?  It is apple season and so they are on sale anywhere from 1.79 zloty(57 cents) to 3.50 zloty ($1.11) a kilogram.  The cheap prices are not the main reason why I using this many apples but more to support the local Polish farmers.

Why the farmers?  My Polish readers are all very aware of what is going but my non-European Union readers may not.  As of the 1st of August, Russian closed its borders to Polish fruits and vegetables and then a few days later Russia announced it would ban most food imports from the US, Canada, EU, Australia and Norway.  Apples, other fruits and vegetables are a $1.3 billion trade every year with Russia.  This sanction is going to take a big effect on these farmers.  Poland exports more 1/2 of its apples to Russia.  Well those apples need to go somewhere, so people here have started a grass-root campaign to get Polish people to eat more apples.

Here is what one crazy American family can do in 3 days to help the Polish apple economy.

My garbage disposal has been getting a good workout the last couple of days.

As you can see we are doing what we can to support the farmers! I have a few more apple recipes that I will be making.  Next week watch out as I will be posting lots of recipes so you too can help support your local apple farmers no matter where you live.

Remember to eat an apple a day to keep Russia away!

What is your favorite way to eat apples, raw or in a recipe?
