Charity Work for Far Away Lands!

One of the neat opportunities about living overseas is the charity work that I get to do locally.  Living back in the states you participate in fundraising efforts to help those living in far away lands but now that I live in one of those far away lands I get to see how and where my money goes.  OK and to be honest my background is a professional fundraiser when I worked for the YMCA as well as serving on several non-profit boards both as paid staff and volunteer.   Also I am half way through my Master’s degree in Non-Profit leadership so I am totally in heaven here!!

One of the proudest things that I have done this year being president of a local international spouses club is the charity work the group has done to raise money for a local orphanage and children’s hospital.  Well today is our biggest fundraiser yet!  Myself and another lady have organized a charity dinner auction with the orphanage.   Now this is/was a strange concept to them as this is not something done here in Europe.    The group I am in has a GREAT group of ladies who donated several neat items to the orphanage from here locally here in Poland as well as their home countries.  Here is just a sample of the items that we got.  Aren’t these great items?

I am working with the orphanage to organize the auction as they have never done an event like this before.  Words can not describe how nervous I am and they are as well.  So if you could keep your finger’s crossed and send happy thought for me and the orphanage today, I would forever be thankful!!!

Which one of these items would you want to bid on?

My name is Tom Burnett and I work for an organisation called Waiting for a Cab. I’ve been reading your blog and think that your contacts and knowledge of Poland could be invaluable for out website. Our aim is to link charities with volunteers and fundraisers in order that people with time, skills and/or money will be able to make a difference.

If you look at you’ll see we’ve had some success in partnering charities that work in Africa, Asia and South America. We’re now moving our focus closer to home, and would really like to include 15-20 charities on the Europe page.

Charities can publicise the things they need – this could simply be financial donations – or they might be able to accept volunteers or non-cash donations. For ideas, please take a look around the website to see what charities have requested.

If you have any ideas that might help us populate the Poland section of our Europe map, I’d be extremely grateful for your help.

The site has received much encouragement from the charity sector already, and we hope that it will become, over time, a global benchmark to map charities all over the world. The site will remain free to list, free of advertising and free to access. This is a philanthropic, self-financed project which we hope will continue to self-populate and grow through peer-review in the coming years.

Many thanks for your time, and I hope you are able to join us.

    Best wishes,

    Tom Burnett

I would LOVE to participate with you on this project! Unfortunately, my life is just a bit crazy this month we are moving to a new house, my son is home for a month from university and it is the end of the school year activities for my 3 other kids. But shoot me an email in a month and we can talk to see how I can help you with the GREAT site you have.
