Christmas Programs Polish style

Have I mentioned how much I love the holiday season?  I do! Why because of the cute kids Christmas programs it brings.

I have seen my share of Christmas programs American style over the last 21 years of having kids , this year was the first year of Christmas programs Polish style!

Early this week I saw another one but this time it was “E’s” turn to perform.  Her class was in charge of organizing the school’s Christmas program, so behind the scenes her teacher was very hard at work.  She did an amazing job organizing this whole program!

Guess who was Mary? That would be E! Why, because she did not want any speaking parts, UUGGHH!

Looks like the classes are going to be getting a few surprises!

This was my 3rd Christmas program that I have attended this year, I really need to find out the story behind Satan being in all of them.

I am finding out another perk of living here in Poland is how much Christ is part of the schools from religion classes to Christmas programs that have Mary and Joseph in them.  When we lived in US, so many of the schools we could not bring up the real reason of the holiday season as it might offend someone.  As you probably know by now we are not Catholic but Mormon but we still have our kids attend religion classes because we feel it is good to teach our children more than one point of view and maybe if more people did that, we wouldn’t have some of the problems we do in the world today. (getting off my soapbox!)

What a great way to really start the holiday season going! The girls school Christmas program opened with Silent Night in both Polish and English with a brief duet by a Italian kid who 4 months ago knew no Polish or English!

Can you believe it is only 5 days till Christmas?

It’s not Satan, but Turoń. Or at least should be, on picture you posted it really look more like Satan. I guess the custom changed over time, and was simplified for school.

Turoń is a beast (name comes from aurochs, or in (modern) Polish: tur), and is one of the traditional characters of “Kolędowanie” (Koledari?), old pre-Christian Slavic custom. During “kolęda” he makes pranks and scares people. At one point he falls/dies and is revived, what symbolizes rebirth of the land after the winter.

Here’s something more, though I couldn’t find much in English (but google translate works more-or-less):

I wasn’t there so I can’t say with certainty but satan’s role may well have been to tempt Joseph to doubt the virgin birth and to divorce Mary. This is an old tradition. In Eastern Christian icons of the Nativity you will find Joseph and satan–depicted as an old man–in deep conversation outside the cave where Mary and Jesus lay.

That was beautiful! It reminds me of when my 5th grade teacher taught us to sing Silent Night in German.
