Last day of school in more ways than one!
Today is the day my girls have been counting down too for the last month, last day of school!! Only one way can describe the year we have had at the International School of Bydgoszcz, interesting! There are been a few highs as well as a few lows but I will get into them later.
The school ended the year on a high note with a sleep-over. Yes, you read that right a sleep-over at the school!!! And no the boys did not sleep in one room and the girls in another, the kids just slept in their classrooms with their teacher. Crazy huh? In the US this would NEVER happen, kids sleeping in the same room together and the teacher sleeping with them! But hey we are in Poland, right?
We dropped the kids off about 6pm and then the parents can either leave right away or stick around for a bit. Many of us stayed for a bit but other took advantage of the free babysitting and had date nights. Unfortunately, I could only stick around for about 30 minutes because I had to be somewhere else that needed mine and my husbands attention. But I did get to enjoy a few moments with my girls.
Last year I spent the night with the girls at this but this year I got a bit wiser and I did not. After spending the night last year, I saw why I was the only parent who did for some crazy reason! As I layed in bed and finally going to bed about 11:30pm, all I could think of was the poor teachers at the school. But when I came back this morning it looked like all the kids had a great night and a wee bit excited for the end of the year certificate ceremony.
Oh, did you notice the kids wearing black and white? It is also a Polish custom for kids to wear black and white or dark blue clothing. Last year we did not know that and so we stuck out like sore thumbs but not this year!!
The girls had a great night to say to say goodbye to many friends who are moving this summer and others are moving to a new school, like us. Yes, we are pulling our 2 girls out of the International school here and sending them to a traditional Polish school next fall. I am sure Polish readers are rolling over and wondering why we are because they think this school is suppose to be the best school here in town, well guess what? It is not(in my opinion)! And my readers outside of Poland are thinking, why in the world would I put them in an all Polish speaking school? We are doing it for the best interest of my girls along with several other families who are pulling their children out that school and enrolling them in different schools here in town.
It is a long story on what happened over this school year but the “nail in coffin” as we say in the US was when the school principal/headmistress handed me my certificate of appreciation at the ceremony this morning and said to me in a quiet voice that only those close could hear, “maybe we should take your picture!’ in a very sarcastic voice. Luckily I was not the only one that heard her say it because it could be used in future events. Now I really have you on pins on what that means. Well that is going to be on another blog post here in the next few days as I have got to make sure I am VERY politically correct as they had said several times this year, “we are going to sue xxxx for slander because of what they said.” Yes this last few weeks have been heated at that school. Oh, also just for your information I did receive permission from the teachers and parent in this blog post to post their pictures! (more about this later too!)
I wanted to say “THANK YOU” to the teachers who taught my girls this year for the great job they did! My girls miss you already!!
What is your favorite thing to do on the last day of school? Us, end of the school year party at our house in the afternoon with friends like we did today.
