Last Sunday we went back to one of my favorite areas of Poland…the Gdansk/Sopot/Gdynia area. Yes, the wonderful beaches they have up there is just one of the reasons why we love going up there.
We went up there for the main purpose to drop my husband off at the airport. Since we were up there already the girls and I decided to head to the beach and watch the Red Bull Air Race in Gdynia. There had been posters up all over town the last few weeks promoting the race and it looked fun.
We ended up spending over 8 hours at the beach that day but it was so much fun and went so fast.
Yes, we are that early they were still cleaning up the beach.
No these are not homeless people they are camping out for the good spots when the gates open up. CRAZY!! Unfortunately the main air show area was fenced off and not going to be open for another 4+ hours and it looked like the beach near the water was fenced off too so time to go find another beach area.
Thank goodness for the GPS. because according to it if we walk through this forest area we should find a beach and still be close enough to the air show.
Jackpot! We found the perfect beach which was right next to the end of the fenced off area of the air race. The only others that were there that early were the college age kids that camped out over night. I felt really old there for a while with all the youngins’ around.
The beach was so empty that there was lots of room to make sand angels.
The life guards getting the beach ready for the soon be full house I am sure of beach go’ers.
The other rescuers busy training for the morning.
3 hours later time to get the air race things ready.
Have I mentioned before that it was one of the great decisions putting the girls in a Polish school? This one girl was sitting next to “E” for like 10 minutes and you could tell she wanted to talk to her but thought she only spoke English as that is what “A” & “E” were speaking to each other. I could see what was going on so I told them to start speaking Polish together and sure enough within a minute the 3 of them were friends for hours.
The weather was perfect for hanging out at the beach!
The lifeguard hard at work making sure everyone was OK at the end of the roped area.
Well it is an hour before show time and the beach is just a wee bit crowded!
Race show time!
The planes were racing each other to go through the course the fastest.
It is crazy to watch them going through those cones.
Not much room for a mistake.
This was so popular they were even showing the show live at movie theaters throughout Poland. You could not pay me enough to be that camera operator. There was even 2 helicopters in the air for more views.
In between the race rounds they had different exhibitions of different planes.
“A” had to go to the bathroom so headed off to the porta-potties in the main show area. Boy, this area just a wee bit crowded.
Kind of like a “Where is Waldo” picture trying to find our spot. Our spot was actually easy because see that red pop-up tent? That would be us!
And it looks like another exhibition is about to begin.
Off they go.
Views like this make me homesick for the US and going to watch the Blue Angels.
Another close look of yet another plane.
I will admit watching one round of the air race was more than enough for me as it was kind of boring to be honest. The exhibitions they did between the round were fun though!
What is you favorite food to take to the beach on a day like this? Us, we love to take pretzels and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!
