Walnuts and More Walnuts

One thing I have started doing more now that I live in Poland compared to living anywhere else in the world…if I can pick it, I will do something with it.  I have done apples, plums and now walnuts!!

Polish people tend to live off of nature, if it is edible they cook, bake or can with it .  I am truly blessed to have some GREAT Polish friends who have shown me these Polish traditions.

The other day behind our church is a walnut tree.  So I went to see if there any walnuts on the ground to pick up to have a few fresh ones at home.  There were a couple on the ground but after throwing a big rock up the tree to knock some more off this is what I can home with… walnuts and more walnuts!

Time to start cleaning and peeling the walnuts.

We all tried to grab the green ones as they are much easier to pull off.

Yes cleaning walnuts are messy especially when they are black as your fingers will be black too by the time you are done.

And we are finished as those green ones are not ready quite yet.

I can’t wait till this weekend as the girls and I are going mushroom picking with their Scout troop!  This is yet one Polish tradition I have yet to participate in.

In our future I see some walnut pie being made and walnut brownies!

What is your favorite way to use walnuts?

Lately every year I pick lots of walnuts. When they are covered with black skin then I roll them on something hard by foot, gently but strongly enough to peel the skin this way. I hope you know that you have to dry them some time, and they are good after some more time, around Chrismas certainly. My father makes two types of cake with walnuts – one with apples, one with carmelized sugar/honey. The one with apples is now in the fridge, walnuts are from last autumn. Be careful during eating, sometimes there is a piece of shell/crus (?) left. ;)

Best use for walnuts? Homemade nougat and walnut nalewka (you make it with the green peels, so you can have both from one walnut, isn’t it awesome? :)). Sadly this year the walnut tree in my country house garden doesn’t have barely any walnuts. :(

Also there are hardly any mushrooms in the woods, except some leccinums (why don’t you have names for most mushrooms in English? :D) near lakes and swamps. :(

“Polish people tend to live off of nature” I love that statement! So true.
